IT departments should capture and track metrics that enable a more rigorous and analytical approach to decision making to influence the business. IT objectives for a metrics program should be to measure and minimize infrastructure IT spending while maximizing productivity for the organization. Work with senior management to include IT metrics as part of strategic projects that inevitably require IT involvement, such as the launch of a new product or application.
Also, consider developing an IT scorecard. Formally tracking IT performance as it is related to IT’s contribution to corporate objectives will ensure that long-term goals stay on track. Single metrics are less effective because they exist in a vacuum: an IT scorecard will provide a system for evaluating what value IT is providing the business. Consider working with a CxO to ensure that the scorecard follows the company-wide scorecard.
